Effortless EPDM Roofing: The Easy Guide to Flat Roof Solutions

If you’re thinking about upgrading your flat roof, EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber roofing might be a top contender. Known for its durability, affordability, and ease of maintenance, EPDM is a popular choice for many residential and commercial buildings. But how easy is it to install an EPDM rubber roof? Here’s a detailed look at the installation process, including tips on using adhesives and roofing sealants.

EPDM rubber roofing is a synthetic rubber material that has stood the test of time. It’s praised for its resistance to weather, UV rays, and extreme temperatures. EPDM comes in large sheets that minimize seams and simplify installation on flat roofs.

Installing an EPDM roof involves several key steps, but with the right preparation, it can be a manageable DIY project. Here’s how to approach it:

Accurate measurements are essential to order the correct amount of EPDM rubber roofing. We recommend adding 200mm on each side to make sure that you have enough material for your roof. If you are unsure how to estimate what rubber size you will need, our roof quote tool is able to work it all out for you. Ensure that your existing roof deck is in good condition. Remove any debris, nails, or old roofing materials.

You will need both the water based adhesive and contact adhesive to be able to install an epdm roof. The water-based adhesive is used for the main field area of the roof and the contact adhesive will be used for the edges and any upstands you may have. We recommend leaving 100mm around the edges for the contact adhesive.

Thoroughly clean the roof to ensure good adhesion. Lay out the EPDM material over the roof. Leave extra material around the edges for trimming. Get your EPDM adhesives and apply an even coat on the surface. Before laying down the EPDM material we recommend waiting around 5 minutes to allow the glue to set off properly. This may change due to the weather, if it is very hot when you are installing your EPDM you may not need to wait 5 minutes as the glue will set of quicker in the heat. Position the EPDM membrane carefully and press it down onto the adhesive.

Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles. Cut away any extra material around the edges for a clean finish. Inspect the entire surface to ensure there are no leaks or issues. Remove any debris and check that all tools are accounted for.

Pros:

  • Simplicity: EPDM rubber roofing is generally straightforward to install compared to other materials.
  • Flexibility: The material is flexible and easy to handle, making it suitable for flat roofs.
  • Minimal Tools Required: Most installations require basic tools and materials.

Cons:

  • Technical Skills Required: Proper application of flashing tapes requires precision.
  • Weather Dependency: Installation should be done in suitable weather conditions to ensure proper adhesion and sealing.
  • Surface Preparation: Proper preparation of the roof surface can be labour-intensive.
